Rich loves to cook...especially while camping. The
challenge of creating a meal that is both nutritious
and delicious far from a bright clean kitchen brings
out the best of his culinary talents.
To keep costs down and to ensure good health we
prepare most of our own food. On those rare
occasions when we crave something different or
new, we simply browse the local restaurants and
chose an interesting meal from the outdoor menu -
maybe even asking about the key ingredients. Then
we head off to the market to recreate it on our own.
MSR Dragonfly Camp Stove
Our camp store is one of the most used items on
our trip.
As we were driving through the mountains of
Costa Rica a few years ago we passed a couple
of touring cyclists. That night at the campsite
they showed us this stove for the first time and
told us about how a part had broken and MSR
sent a replacement by FedEx no questions
asked.
We like to support that kind of company...and a
product that is not throwaway. We bought one
and have never regretted it.
Some important features:
- It simmers (some stoves have one setting)
- It runs on just about any liquid that burns.
- It is easy to use.
- It's durable.
The only drawback is that it is very loud and
wakes the neighbors in the campsite early in the
morning.
We started out the journey with a
set of MSR BlackLite pots. Rich is
not a big fan of non-stick pan and
he was not sad when the non stick
coating quickly separated from the
bottom and the black outer coating
peeled from the outside.
Imagine, after eating a scrumptious meal you wash
up your dishes, unsnap them and pack them away
in a folder the size of an envelope. These Orikaso
pieces are remarkable space and weight savers.
They have proven to be one of our best purchases.
We have not been sponsored by any company. If a product stinks, we'll tell you.

Stove Update: The thing
that fails most often on
the MSR stove is the
plastic pump. Since we
have two fuel bottles we
carry two pumps.
It may have something to do with the fact that Amanda often used them to make
popcorn,
