It seems that the idea of planned
obsolescence has not yet reached our
German friends. Schwalbe produces a tire
that is generally agreed by cycle tourists to
be the best. Apparently this tire can run over
glass, nails, sharpened spikes, thorns, chefs
knives, and flaming pin cushions without
suffering the slightest injury.
We shall see.
UPDATE
UPDATE 2
We both experienced flat tires in the first
seven weeks. It turns out that the tires we
purchased from eBay were the non-kevlar
version. We have since replaced them with
the Schwalbe Marathon Plus version and
have experienced no problems. Be sure to
get the PLUS.
We have not been sponsored by any company. If a product stinks, we'll tell you

In preparation for this journey Rich had been
loading up his touring bike with just about
anything heavy he could find (tool, rocks,
dumbbells...) and riding the six miles to the
YMCA to swim laps. One day, on his way
back, he got...gasp...a flat tire! A pin had
somehow poked through the supposedly
bullet-proof coating on the tire and created a
slow leak. It did not instill much confidence in
these tires...
We purchased much of our gear second-hand through ebay
