Cycle Touring Health | Ankle Sprain
|
While an ankle strain or sprain is not specific to
cycle touring it is certainly an injury that can stop
a cycle tourist in his or her tracks.
Rich twisted his ankle while
running one morning on
Langkwai Island in Malaysia.
On the uneven sidewalk his
ankle rolled outward. Strangely
the pain was on both sides of
the ankle though only the
exterior swelled.
Fortunately Amanda was
thinking and ran out to the
nearest mini-market and
purchased several bags of ice.
Rich plunged his foot in the
bucket while Amanda rushed off
to a local internet cafe to
research how to treat the injury.
This was just an
hour after the injury
It seems most experts
recommend a variation of the
RICE formula.
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
Amanda spent the first
day running back and
forth to the mini-market
purchasing ice. Rich
iced his foot for about
20-30 minutes, at two
hour intervals.
Between the icings he
wrapped the ankle with
a compression
bandage (ace
bandage) and kept it
elevated.
The second morning Rich
awoke with just a bit of
swelling, black and blue
bruises along base of his foot
on the outside but little or no
pain.
The second day they followed
the same routine, but spread
the icings out to only four a
day.
By the second afternoon Rich
realized that this was a pretty
good deal, lounging on the
beach while Amanda waited
on him hand-and-foot. He tried
to extend the recuperation
period as long as possible but
she quickly caught on and
announced she would be
making dinner that night.
That's all it took to get him up
off his rear end.
The second morning it looked far worse than it felt.
