Cycle Touring Health | Bed Bugs
Unless you stay at the Sheraton for your entire
trip you will more than likely come across
bedbugs in some of the lower quality
accommodations you find yourself encamped
in while touring.

Bedbugs leave signs of their presence by
depositing tiny black or brown spots of waste
on sheets and walls.  Every so often it is
possible to actually find a bedbug himself.

If you are itchy at night and can rule out
mosquitoes as the culprit, chances are you've
got a hungry colony of bedbugs living in the
mattress or walls.  Rooms with many bedbugs
are said to smell sickly sweet smell.

The bug bites in a darkened room and take up
to ten minutes to drink blood before leaving
behind an itchy, inflamed mark.  Fortunately
they do not leave any diseases behind.  Adults
bedbugs are about 5mm in length.

The good news is that it is rare to actually
become a bedbug carrier.  Once they've
settled into a piece of furniture or bed they do
not like to move out.

If you find yourself in a room with a bedbug
problem, move somewhere else.

To prevent the bugs from driving you crazy you
might consider purchasing a silk sleeping sack
treated with permethrin.
