Everything has changed recently in the treatment of road rash recently. The old solution was to scrub clean the wound with hydrogen peroxide then slather on the antibacterial ointment. Now, they say to clean the wound without scrubbing then place a loose, breathable bandage over the area. When we get road rash we'll let you know how this new treatment has worked out.
Jelly Fish Sting
While cycle tourists are no more prone to jelly fish stings than any other traveler, Rich was stung in Malaysia so we've included it here.
The owner of our beach cottage made Rich the local remedy for the sting that worked within a matter of minutes
Squeeze One Lime
A Few Spoonfulls of Vinegar
A Spoonful of Honey
Mix it up
Slop it on
Rich covered the sting with the concoction. The burning and itch went away almost immediately and it left no scarring.
Pollution Rash
Amanda got this rash on her leg after walking through the surf of a polluted beach.
The rash refused to go away in the humid heat. It began to cause a rather deep wound and Rich began to search for medicinal remedies. Hardheaded as ever, Amanda refused to use medication and decided to search out a more natural approach.
Soaking a towel in near-boiling clean water she held the towel on the rash for as long as she could stand, then soaked it again and started over. After doing this twice, the rash showed significant improvement. Three days later it was practically gone.
Prickly Heat
Amanda is plagued by prickly heat, a rash of small red dots that spreads on her neck, chest, arms, and sometimes on her legs. Rich gets it sometimes too.
Prickly heat powder is available just about any place where prickly heat is a problem. Generally it works overnight or at least within a few days.
Athletes Foot
It is traditional in most of Asia to remove ones shoes before entering homes, buildings and many small shops. Combined this tradition with sweltering heat, humidity and varying degrees of cleanliness, and you've got the perfect incubator for athletes foot fungal infection.
Treatment for athletes foot takes a surprisingly long time. Rich got a terrible case in Malaysia (probably because he never wears shower shoes) and it took several weeks of twice-a-day Minazol powder to finally get a handle on it.
Strangely, men seem to suffer from Athletes Foot far more than women and Amanda never seems to have a problem with it. That said, she does wear her shower shoes everywhere.
Chilbains
Amanda suffers from Chilbains on her fingers in cold, damp, windy weather. It is similar to chapped lips but only on the fingers. The get to the point where they swell like little sausages and the skin breaks then they begin to bleed.
She found that long-fingered gloves helped solved the exposure problem. Lanolin lotion which is typically used for baby rashes also helped.
