Ride/Road - Highway 4 south. Sealed.
Past at least three small towns with all amenities, plus
open markets. Services well spaced along the road
including food and toilets.
Pedaled by a beautiful Wat on the ride worth a picture.
Hills - Hilly. Some good climbs on the way out of Khao
Lak. Some flat stretches too.
Thai Muang is a moderately sized town with all the
amenities a traveler could need. Shops, well-stocked
stores, restaurants and street food vendors. Town has
a large open market. A few stores on the main street
had signs for internet.
The beach in Thai Muang is long, wide and beautiful.
Access to the beach is about 1k west from the town
center. Nice newly paved road runs along the sea and
a new promenade area is across from the beach. Not
much development along the sea road. Mostly Thai
homes and a few restaurants. This area was hit hard
by the tsunami in 2004 and recovery seems slow.
Accommodations in town - There are few places to
stay near the beach. Pedaled by other sleeping
options, but didn't check them out. A town this size,
with it's proximity to such a lovely beach, should have
more accommodations. Perhaps in the future there
will be more choices as the community is still
recovering from the damage of the 2004 tsunami.
Slept - Thaimuang Resort. The nicest place in town.
Cost 500 b ($13.51) Also have bungalows for 1000 b.
($27.00)
Amenities - New bungalow complex. Attached unit,
motel-style on ground level. Nice, large room with
double bed, tile floor en suite bath with hot water, TV
(all Thai channels) and a/c.
