Day 2
Phnom Penh to Skuon, Cambodia
Kilometers  82   Miles 49
Road/Ride  - National Hwy 6 is sealed the entire way.
Entire ride is on a sealed, narrow two-lane road.  At times
there is no shoulder, other times the shoulder is the
unpaved part of the road that is hard packed dirt, or gravel.
Traffic is moderate at times chaotic.  The shoulder comes
in handy when cars are passing.

To get to Hwy 6 north toward Skun and Siem Reap we had
to get on the Japanese Friendship Bridge out of the city.
Take Sisowath Quay Road north.  Go under the bridge and
take the first left onto P72.  Go around the traffic circle to
get on bridge.

Hwy 6 north of Phnom Penh toward Siem Reap is sealed
and well signed.

Traffic is moderate to hectic at times for the first 50
kilometers.  Mini-vans overloaded with locals sitting on the
roof pass on the wrong lane and pushed us off the road
onto the gravel shoulder several times.

The road is build up with shops, markets and vendors for
the first 30 kilometers.  After around kilometer 30 the
scenery changes to rural surroundings.

At kilometer 50 there is a split in the road.  Take the right
road toward Siem Reap.  At this point the road continues to
be two lanes with kilometer markers posted about every 10
kilometers.  Shoulder appears and disappears.   At times it
is the old unpaved part of the road.

The road traffic is much lighter and the scenery continues to
be spectacular.

Food/water and services are spaced along this ride.  Most
of the villages have a vendor hut selling packed goods,
some fruit, water and drinks.
Gas stations with toilets are few and far between, but they
do pop up usually at the entrance or exit of any small village.

Hills - The only climb on this ride is the slight incline when
you get on the Japanese Friendship Bridge going out of
Phnom Penh.

Other accommodations along this ride - At kilometer 6, 8, 9
and 11 north of Phnom Penh there are hotel some with
restaurants.  At kilometer 72 (43.2 miles) there is a sign for
the Phnom Cheung Prey Resort on a dirt road off of hwy 6.

Scenery - After kilometer 30 the scenery is breathtaking.
Rural, farming villages white cattle pulling wooden carts,
traditional wooden homes on stilts.   Women with
checkered scarves wrapped around their heads, men in
checkered sarongs.  Trees along the road give this ride
much needed shade.

Skun town is not much of a place.  The town is small and
consists of a traffic circle and three roads that extend for
about three city blocks.  One road is the one we entered on.
The other road goes toward Siem Reap and the third road
goes toward east on hwy 7.

The only reason we stopped in Shun was to break up a
long ride.

Several reasonably okay guesthouses that look the same
are crowded together on the road toward Siem Reap. They
all have signs with the words guesthouse on them.   The
one we stayed in was on the left side of the road.

Skun has shops and a central market.  Most of the
guesthouses have restaurants in the ground floor that seem
very popular with the locals for breakfast and dinner.

Slept - Guesthouse on left side of road toward Siem Reap.
Cost - $5.00
Amenities - Restaurant in ground floor.  Room is basic.
Window toward the street.  Two double beds, fan, en suite
western toilet, shower over toilet.  The room was full of ants.
We did not find this out until the next morning when our
packs were full of ants.
Rich carried the bikes up a flight of stairs and we stored
them in the room  Plenty of room.
