Day 3
Skun To Kompong Thom, Cambodia
Kilometers  95  Miles 57
Road/Ride -   NHwy 6 is sealed the entire ride.  Shoulder is
hard packed dirt or gravel, that is narrow at times and
appears and disappears.

Traffic is light to moderate.  Mostly tourist buses and
mini-vans that seem to come in spurts.  Once again the
passing cars coming toward us in our lane threw us into the
dirt shoulder.  Kilometer markers continue for the entire
ride.

Road work - Around 17 kilometers (10 miles) south of
Kompong Thom, the road is in need of repair.  For about 1
kilometer the road has sandy parts and loose gravel where
the road work is being done.

Hills - One minor uphill.  The only reason I mention it is
because there is a sign on the road announcing it.  But it's
nothing major.

Scenery - The surrounding area along this ride is beautiful.
Locals are friendly and call out hello.  We passed miles of
dry rice paddies, farms, rural dwellings with vendors
lounging in the shade of their make-shift huts.  Miniature
horses with feathers and bells run along the road pulling
wooden cars.  Beautiful Wats, schools and cattle herders
are all along this ride.

Food and water are frequent.  Gas stations are scarce but
we found some private pastures for a pee break.  Around
kilometer 35 there are two large restaurants used by tour
buses for a lunch break.  Nice restroom facilities and a
good place for a break and snack.

Kompong Thom is a small town fairly built up mostly around
national Hwy 6.  The town has a central market, shops and
a few nice options for accommodations with restaurants.
The sidewalks have vendor selling fresh fruit,  food carts,
and sidewalk restaurants.

The town sees more tourist than other towns along this
route because of the close proximity to the Sambor Prei
Kuk ruins that were built before the ruins of Angkor Wat.
The Sambor ruins are about 30 kilometers from town on
route NH 64 off of route NH6 toward Siem Reap.  It's a dirt
road that takes about 1 hour on motorized vehicle to arrive
at the ruins.

Slept - Arunras Hotel
Location - Just off of Hwy 6 N on the left side if heading
toward Siem Reap.
Cost - $13.00
Amentities - Large tile room with window and private
balcony overlooking hwy 6N.  Two double beds, en suite
bath with shower and tub.  A/C, fridge and TV with several
English channels.  Hotel has an elevator and a large
restaurant attached.
Bikes were locked in the garage across the street.

Other accommodations is the town - The Arunras Hotel has
a guesthouse attached and there are two other
guesthouses in town. One is at the north end of twon called
something like Plauny Thurney Guesthouse.  Another hotel
in town is the the Stung Sen Royal Garden Hotel, just right
of the bridge going toward Siem Reap on NHwy 6.
