Day 4 Kompong Thom to Kompong K-Dei, Cambodia Kilometers 92 Miles 56.2
|
Road/Ride - National Highway 6 sealed the entire ride.
Good size, paved shoulder.
Mile markers on the right side of the road (if heading north)
are newly posted with distances/towns. There are
kilometer markers posted on the left side of the road that
show up sporadically with no real consistency counting
down toward the next town.
Traffic is light mostly tourist buses and overloaded
mini-vans.
Food and water all along this ride. A string of villages with
open-air thatched roof food stands, mostly selling
processed food drinks and some fruit.
Bus stop restaurant, large with toilets about 17 kilometers
north of Kompong Thom.
Gas stations with toilets just out of Kompong Thom north
end, and at kilometer 50 in Strung town.
Town of Strung at kilometer 50 (30 miles) is the most built
up town on the entire ride. It is at the mid-way point of this
ride. It has restaurants, shops and a gas station for toilet
break. It also has one very basic guesthouse.
Hills - No hills on the entire ride.
Scenery - Very dry surroundings. Not one tree lining the
road. Mostly dried out rice paddy fields along side
traditional homes with tile roof and pointed ends. Large
hay stacks and dug out water pools decorate the front area
of most homes.
Accommodations along this ride - We passed one very
basic guesthouse in Strung town around kilometer 50.
Kompong Kdei, is a very small town built on the edge of
Hwy 6. The town has a few guesthouses to break up a long
riding day. The highlight of the town is the unused old Naga
Bridge. It is parallel to the new bridge. The old bridge is
down a hard-packed dirt road about 500 meters from the
highway. The dirt road is to the right (if heading north)
before you cross the new bridge. The old bridge is really
worth the extra pedals to see. It is absolutely breathtaking
with the sides carved out of old stone blocks into Naga
cobra heads.
The town has a small central market across the road from
the Sakal guesthouse, several shops with food snacks.
The Sakal guesthouse has a busy restaurant on the ground
floor.
Other accommodations in town - There is one other
guesthouse, down a dirt road to the right just past the Sakal
GH. Sign is on highway 6. It looked a bit worn down.
Additional Data - Per a reliable source there is a
guesthouse behind the market called Nana Guesthouse.
According to our source it is more of a home stay, but they
found it fine for 1 night. Source: Kat and Mat Smith.
Slept - Sakal Guesthouse
Location - Right side of road (if heading north) on NH6,
before the bridge, just across from the central market.
Cost - $5.00
Amenities - Basic room in a building in the back of the
guesthouse building. Large tile room with window facing
local homes on the opposite side of highway 6. Two
double beds, en suite bath with shower over toilet. Cold
water. Fan. The guesthouse building in the front has a
restaurant.
Bikes locked behind the restaurant between the two
buildings. Very secure.
