Luang Prabang to Phu Khun, Laos  Transport mini-bus

Kilometers 121  Miles  72.6

Road/Ride - Hwy 13.  Sealed.  This is my perception
from the window of the mini-bus.  Hilly, curvy road with
no shoulder.  Traffic was light to non-existent.
Spectacular scenery.  Very green, lush forested
surroundings.

Accommodations between Luang Prabang and Phu
Khun - Other cyclists wonder if there is a place to
sleep between Luang Prabang and Phu Khun.  We
can now definitely say that we saw the guesthouse that
is located in Kui Kasham a small town that is about 70
k south of Luang Prabang.  Phu Khun also has a basic
guesthouse on the main road in the center of town.
Well signed.

Phu Khun is a very small town with one basic
guesthouse on the main street.  There are food
vendors, restaurants, shops and good place to break
up a long riding day.

Phu Khun to Kasi on bicycles
Kilometers  45.11  Miles  27

Road/Ride - Hwy 13.  Sealed road.  No shoulder, but
hardly any car traffic.  We avoided a lot of climbing by
driving over the peak and beginning our ride in Phu
Khun, but we still had some good climbs in the day.
Immediately, after arriving in Phu Khun we got on the
road to Kasi.  Lots of foot/pedal traffic on the road.
Kids on bikes coming or going to school take over the
road as do farmers pushing wooden carts, women
with sacks strapped to their foreheads filled with
wood.  Scenery is mostly farmers cultivating fields,
women weaving palm branches for their thatched roofs.

Laotians are very friendly, especially the kids.  They
run up to the road to greet us and offer their tiny hands
for a shake as we go by.  Everyone yells out,
"Sabadee"  (hello in Lao) and some say hello or good
morning in English.

The scenery is mostly jungle, lush green.  Farms and
tiny villages scattered along the road.  Beautiful scenic
ride all around.

No services such as gas stations, but plenty of bushes
for pee breaks.  Not many places to eat.  Some
villages have tiny stands with drinks, snacks and some
sold bananas, watermelon and oranges.

Weather - After the morning cool breeze disappears
the day becomes quite hot and the sun is blazing.

Hills -  The ride was lumpy, undulated.  Up and down
with two significant steep climbs.

Slept - Somchit Guesthouse  .
Cost - 90,000 kip  ($9.37)
Location - South of town on the left side.  Well signed.
Amenities - Brand new building with nicely decorated
and furnished rooms.  Ours had a double bed with fan
and a/c, TV only Thai/Lao channels.  En suite bath, hot
water and huge window.  Guesthouse also has a
restaurant.
Bikes fit nicely in the room.

Kasi is a small village, but it does have a several small
stores with the typical knick-knacks and snacks, plus a
few restaurants.

Other accommodations in town - Passed two more
guesthouses just as we were leaving town on the south
end.  Not as nice or new as the Somchith (north end of
town), but okay for one night.
