Road/Ride - Hwy 13. Sealed. No shoulder. Morning
started out chilly. We left the guesthouse around 6:30
am in a misty fog. Again spectacular scenery. Great
ride all around. The jutting cliffs, the jungle lush
scenery, the traditional villages and the cheery kids
make this ride one of our favorite rides yet.
Hills - One steep climb to mention at about kilometer
20 that lasted till about 25. Then it was down hill for a
while. Some undulated patches as we continued the
ride, but nothing too serious
Slept - Ben Sabai Bungalows
Cost - $25.00 US (high season)
Location - On the banks of the Nam Song River
looking over the amazing jagged cliffs. Unbelievably
spectacular location.
Amenities - Luxurious traditional Lao bamboo and
brick bungalow with French doors that open to a
balcony overlooking the river and the mountains. The
bungalow is tastefully decorated with traditional Lao
decorum. The room had one double bed with a/c and
en suite bath.
The hotel restaurant is on the riverbank and is the
perfect place to watch the sunset. There are also
plenty of nice tables to sit in the garden and enjoy the
scenery. Free breakfast included. HIGHLY
RECOMMEND.
Vang Vieng is not a pretty town but it is located in one
of the most beautiful places on earth. The highlight is
its location along the Nam Song river surrounded by
forested mountains with jagged cliffs. Plenty of
opportunities for the adventurous to flex some muscles
as tours are available to go caving, rock climbing,
tubing and water rafting. If you're spending the night
here, I recommend staying at one of the places that is
on the riverbank. It makes for a wonderful stay.
We had lunch at the Organic Farm Cafe on the main
street. The mulberry shake is delicious and both our
meals were well prepared and very good. The
portions are big. The café is run by the Mulberry
Organic Farm located about 2 k north of town where
they grow mulberry trees and organic vegetables, in
addition to teaching local children to speak English.
The farm is always happy to have guests volunteer and
they offer basic accommodations along the river for
overnight stays.
