Day 2 Hue to Lang Co, Vietnam Kilometers 67 Miles 40.2
|
Road/Ride - Highway 1A - Completely sealed road
with wide shoulder. At times the road has four
lanes, then it goes back to two, but the shoulder
always remains adequate.
Traffic light to moderate. The majority of the traffic
is bikes and scooters. About 5% of the traffic is
tourist buses, public buses and trucks. Very few
private vehicles. More annoying than the traffic is
the incessant honking of the trucks, buses,
mini-vans and scooters.
Every inch of road is populated with a town,
homes, cemeteries or a rice field. No private
spots off the hwy to use as a rest (pee) stop.
Gasoline stations have some variation of a toilet.
Some toilet facilities at gas stations are as rough
as a concrete slab with a gutter carved along a
cement wall or if I'm lucky I'll find a dark stall with
squatter.
Hills - Two worth mentioning. First at kilometer 42
(25.2 miles) south of Hue for about 1.5 kilometers
and the second at kilometer 59 (35.4 miles) for 1.3
kilometers. Shoulder on the climbs does shrink at
times or else it's on a slant, but traffic is light
enough that it is not a problem.
Weather - Mostly cloudy, cool breeze with a lot of
smog and brush burning smoke in the air. We
wore our facemasks for the majority of the ride.
Mild headwind hit us the entire way. No rain.
Lang Co town is built right on Hwy 1 in between a
lovely bay and palm tree covered beach on the
Golf of Tonkin. The town itself is just a long strip of
shops, homes and restaurants. It has a good
market and plenty of places to find ready made
food and basic necessities.
The beach is wide and long with lots of waves.
The water looked grayish. We were lucky to arrive
in town when the sun was out and it made for a
nice beach day.
Slept - Lang Co Hotel and restaurant
Location - On the beachside of Hwy 1. The sign
on the road says, "Lang Co. Beach ECO Area,
Tourist Company. Turn toward the sea and go up
the steep, wide driveway to the main building.
Cost - $13.00 - Cold shower, no breakfast. Prices
go higher depending on amenities and view.
Amenities - Chose one of the cheaper rooms with
a "garden" view instead of the sea view. An entire
wall of our room was a window opening up to a
large balcony. The angle of the room gave us a
fantastic view of the beach and the mountains.
The "garden" as it turns out is a cemetery.
The room had two twin beds, table with two chairs,
TV with 1 English channel (upon request), en suite
bath with no separate shower area, cold water,
western toilet and fridge.
We rolled the bikes right into the room and on to
the balcony. We rolled the bicycles into our room
at night and still had plenty of room.
Other accommodations in town - Several options.
We saw three newer looking guesthouses and
checked prices at two other resorts in town in
addition to the Lang Co hotel. Other buildings in
town looked like guesthouses, but they didn't have
a sign in English.
