Day 8 Bong Son to Quy Nhon, Vietnam Kilometers 91.8 Miles 57.4
|
Ride/Road - Hwy 1 Sealed with wide shoulder.
Exiting Bong Son there are two options to get
back on Hwy 1A. Take the road that goes over the
bridge. The road to the right of the bridge also
goes to Hwy 1 in a round about way, and adds
about 4 kilometers to the ride.
The ride started out with moderate traffic and it
progressively got worst. By 11:00 a.m. the traffic
was incredibly hectic and at times dangerous.
Trucks and buses were passing on all sides and a
few times they drove on the shoulder.
The ride is very scenic with rice paddies, mountain
views and lush landscape.
Towns are evenly scattered throughout the ride
with plenty of food, rest and pee options.
Hills - 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of Bong Son
is a major 10% grade hill. The road is undulating
until around kilometer 40 south of Bong Son.
After kilometer 40 (24 miles) the road is flat.
Yuppie!
Other accommodations on this ride - At kilometer
26 (15.6 miles) south of Bong Son at the top of the
hill there is a hotel on the left side if heading south.
Quy Nhon is a medium size city with a wide
avenue built along the Quy Nhon Bay with nice
public spaces such as parks and playgrounds that
extends for several kilometers.
Traffic is light along the waterfront but is quite
hectic on other major streets west of the bay, such
as Tran Hung Dao that connects with Hwy 1 A.
The streets west of the beach are a busy tangled
mess, very built up with commercial buildings such
as electronics stores, open front shops selling
snacks, clothing stores, beauty salons, restaurants,
cafes, mini-bike repair shops, internet and food
vendors.
Several new buildings have gone up around the
water including luxury resorts, hotels and a mall like
complex with a huge supermarket on Nguyen Tat
Thanh (the big new wide street off of Ngueyn Hue).
The famous Lon Cho market burned down a month
ago (as of 12 Feb. 2007 writing) so the vendors
have set up along the street west of Barbara's
Backpacker.
.
Slept - Barbara's Backpacker
Cost - $6.00 shared bath or $8.00 en suite.
Location - 18 D Nguyen Hue across from the
beach. Great location.
Amenities - Retro building with a kind of cheesy
grandeur of days gone by. Spiral wooden
staircase and amazing antique tiles cover the
floors and communal spaces are decorated with
an exotic motif with dark wood furniture. Our
room had lovely tile floor, fan, two twin beds with
mosquito nets, thin mattress, a tiny table with two
chairs, and an armoire. The en suite restroom is
long and narrow with a western toilet and hot
shower together. Our window had a view of street
below and the beach front.
Nice restaurant downstairs that serves western
and Asian food. Barbara is very helpful and
knowledgeable about the area. She bakes great
bread and cakes. Even if we had not stayed here
we would have come here to eat.
Bikes were locked in the lobby next to the stairwell.
Very safe.
Staff were happy to store our tofu and vegetables
in the kitchen's refrigerator.
Other accommodations in Town - Quy Nhon has
plenty of accommodations in every price range.
From fancy brand new resorts along the bay to
clean and comfy guesthouses.
Barbara's On the Beach has been gone for a while
now and the only Barbara's in town is the
guesthouse where we stayed.
