underneath the stairwell. Very safe.
Ride/Road - Exiting Quy Nhon on new road
Highway 1D - To get to Highway 1D the new
coastal road from Barbara's Backpacker go south
on Nguyen Hue Road and turn right onto Duong
Tay Son Road (toward the bus station) and then
take the first left after the bus station at the traffic
circle. The new road is signed as Quy Nhon Song
Cau Road then it eventually becomes Highway 1D.
We took the new coastal road Highway 1D out of
Quy Nhon toward Song Cau because supposedly
the new road avoids going over the Cu Mong
Pass.
Highway 1 D - The road is sealed with a wide
shoulder. The road 1 D cuts about 13 kilometers
(7.8 miles) between Quy Nhon and Song Cau.
Traffic light to moderate.
Highway 1A - Sealed, good shoulder. Very heavy
traffic. The road hugs the coast and is very scenic.
A continuously undulating ride with a few major
climbs, but some nice flat moments to catch your
breath.
The towns along this ride are less developed,
more like large villages.
Food, rest and pee stops are scattered along this
ride.
Hills - From the moment we got on Highway 1D
(new coastal road) we started a gradual continual
climb. The climb reminded us of the Hai Van
Pass, very scenic, not much traffic, but lots of
steady climbing for several kilometers.
Supposedly we should have avoided the Cu Mong
Pass on this new coastal road, but it seemed to us
that we climbed over some part of the Cu Mong
Pass.
This ride is continually undulated.
Another climb comes just south of Sau Cau. It is a
long steady climb.
About 20 kilometers north of Tuy Hoa is another
challenging pair of hills. It is a 10% grade climb
and it felt long.
Accommodations along the road. -
Just south of the intersection of Highway 1D and
Highway 1A is a hotel.
30 kilometers (18 miles) north of Tuy Hoa we
passed two motels on the right side of the Highway
if traveling south.
61 kilometers (36.1 miles) south of Quy Nhon is
Sau Cau town is 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east off
of Highway 1 and has accommodations.
Tuy Hoa Town - Entering Tuy Hoa from the north.
On Hwy 1 there is a sign that points toward Tuy
Hoa that says 7 kilometers. Do not take this exit
and continue on Highway 1A south and enter Tuy
Hoa further south.
We took the first exit and it turned out to be a new
section of Tuy Hoa that is currently being
developed. It has wide avenues, in anticipation of
a lot of growth, and traffic was non-existent. The
new area has many vacant lots but there are
several new hotels and internet cafes that have
opened up in preparation for the inhabitants and
traffic.
We pedaled through this area toward the center of
town for 7 kilometers (4.2 miles) to get to our hotel
and back on Hwy 1.
Tuy Hoa is a non-descript medium size town that is
a very built up commercial center. The streets are
crowded with every kind of shop imaginable,
restaurants, and accommodations.
Once we entered the old part of town the traffic
was congested and quite busy. We lost our
bearings and a young local asked us where we
were headed. He led us on his scooter all the way
to the entrance of our hotel.
Other accommodations in town - Plenty of
accommodations to choose from.
