Cone wrenches are used
to tighten two nuts
together to lock
something in place.  On
bicycles cone wrenches
are used to tighten the
nuts that lock the bearings
in at the hub of the wheel.
They can also be used to
remove the pedals,
tighten the brake cables,
and adjust the headset on
some bikes.   It is a good
idea to carry the  proper
cone wrenches for the bike as they are difficult to find in
some countries.
Some have suggested that it may have been wise
for us to simply replace the hubs on our wheels with
those that do not need cone wrenches for
adjustment.  Of course, we are far too cheap for this,
but for others it may make sense.
